THE THEME OF KÄTU2011
The KäTu symposium is an annual meeting point for researchers, educators and practitioners of translation and interpreting. The theme of the ninth symposium, to be held at the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu, is the multidisciplinary nature of these fields.
As a field of research, translation studies has developed from investigations concentrating on literary and Bible translations into a multidisciplinary subject area in which translation, interpreting and other related phenomena are often examined, described and explicated with the help of methods and theories from other fields of research. In addition to literary studies and theology, which have traditionally offered means for translation studies, the neighbouring disciplines include at least linguistics, cultural studies, cognitive sciences, information and computer sciences, psychology, sociology, and history. Even an individual study can be multidisciplinary in various ways.
With Multidisciplinarity as the theme of the ninth KäTu symposium, we cordially invite translators, interpreters, and translator and interpreter trainers and researchers to give presentations on studies and projects of multidisciplinary nature. The multidisciplinarity of translation studies can be discussed, for example, from the perspective of following questions:
· How did translation studies develop into a multidisciplinary field of research? How is the historical weight of individual disciplines reflected in translation studies?
· Is it possible to determine the core, or the margins, of translation studies?
· What are the advantages and disadvantages of multidisciplinarity to translation studies?
· How does one demarcate an individual study in the field of intersecting disciplines? Who makes the definition?
· What concrete benefits does the multidisciplinary nature of translation and interpreting offer to practicing translators and interpreters?
As usual, papers on other issues of translation and interpreting are also warmly welcome.
PLENARY SPEAKERS
The two plenary speakers in the symposium are Susanne Göpferich (Justus-Liebig-Universität, Gießen) and Pekka Kujamäki (University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu).
WORKSHOPS, SECTION PAPERS AND POSTERS
Workshops run for two hours and may discuss a certain problem more generally, take the form of a panel discussion or investigate a given topic from a more problem-centred perspective.
Since one of the aims of the symposium is to bring together professional translators and interpreters and translator and interpreter trainers and researchers, we will this time organize a workshop with the special theme “The Voice of Practice”. For this workshop, we would like to invite presentations by practicing translators and interpreters on current trends and issues of worklife and questions that exercise the minds of practicing professionals. 10–15 minutes is reserved for each individual, or joint, presentation, which is followed by a discussion on the topic.
Suggestions for presentations in “The Voice of Practice” workshop as well as other workshop themes are expected by 31 January 2010. Suggestions for section papers and poster are also expected by 31 January 2011. Proposals (400 words maximum) should be sent as email attachments (in either rtf or doc format) to the address katu2011@uef.fi. The suggestion should mention whether it is as proposal for a) “The Voice of Practice” workshop, b) a workshop, c) a section paper, or d) a poster.
Information about approval will be sent by 28 February 2011.
INTRODUCTION TO THE USE OF TRANSLATION MEMORIES
There is a special workshop in the symposium concentrating on the functions, advantages and disadvantages of translation memory programmes. The workshop is aimed at researchers, teachers, translators and students who have no experience of using translation memories and are not familiar with their main principles. The instructor is translator entrepreneur Hannu Jaatinen. The workshop requires separate registration and has an additional fee of EUR 20. The maximum number of participants is 20. At least 10 participants are required for the workshop to be arranged.
WORKING LANGUAGES
The primary working languages in the symposium are Finnish, Swedish and English. For the use other languages and the possible need for interpreting, contact the organizers.
PUBLICATION
After the symposium there will be an online publication in the MikaEL series, where everyone who has presented a paper may submit an article. The publications from previous years are accessible at http://www.sktl.net/mikael/. The stylesheet and information on editors will be provided during the symposium.

REGISTRATION AND CONFERENCE FEE
The registration fee is EUR 60. For students, postgraduate students and SKTL members (the Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters) the fee is EUR 30. (Both rates include VAT at 23%.) The fee covers all symposium material and coffee on both days.
